How to Quote Famous People

"Yadda yadda yadda" by Blah Blah

“Yadda yadda yadda” by Blah Blah

Learning how to quote famous people is about more than grammar. When a writer quotes someone, especially at the head of an article, chapter or larger work, he is not just agreeing with the words of a master but aligning himself with a world view and revealing a portion of his choice of reading, which in turn reveals a degree of the author’s acquired knowledge and discerned wisdom. That is why it is paramount to know something about the person you quote as well as his/her more important works, especially the one quoted.

These days, information comes to us so easily that there is both a growing popularity of material separated from its source and a growing availability of research tools to reconnect it. So there is ample opportunity to look as if you know your stuff even if you are a novice. But readers are savvy and they have no bones about picking a bone with writers especially if readers can maintain their anonymity. Being a writer means putting a name, even if it’s a pseudonym, out there and protecting it from slander and misunderstanding. Misquoting and misusing a quote puts a writer in the awkward position of self defense against those who have nothing to lose. When faced with such moments I surrender my name to the sanctity and sanity of humility.

It is good to quote others and to give credit where credit is due. It is better to admit when wrong and plead mercy than to defend a lost cause and be judged. It is best to do your due diligence up front. You may quote me 😉 .

Orotek booth at SEMA Show 2011

I designed, photographed and edited all the images for this booth which I had built by Expo Marketing for Orotek and Revolution Supply. I also produced the two-minute video loop on the center monitor. The booth is 10’x30′ and recently appeared at the SEMA Show 2011 in Las Vegas.

The entire campaign consisted of printed and electronic invitations, point of sale easels, printed and electronic advertisements, booth images, and QR codes; all of which were branded with the Orotek and iORO logos that I had previously designed. I snapped and enhanced all photos used in the images and came up with the motif of the TPMS sensor whooshing from the wheel.

A real sensor was attached to this product easel

This is a sample of the product easel. The sensor is missing because I designed it so that we could attach a real sensor. This is the same motif as a previous blog entry for an iORO advertisement also related to SEMA Show 2011.

I cleaned up this mobile phone Quick Recognition code symbol using Photoshop’s shape and pen tools to create a re-sizable vector graphic. The rounded edges give it some style. I was able to embed a TPMS sensor int the lower right corner and the code still resolves to the iPhone/smart phone optimized destination web page that I created. The page explains the features and benefits of the iORO trio of sensors and provides a long list of the applications (the list should be moved behind a secure login or removed by December 2011 as planned.)

There were two sets of invitations that went out by mail and email; one for Orotek and one for Revolution Supply. The one pictured here is for Orotek. There was also a third page handout used for attracting sales reps.

Press Release – OROTEK Ap Guide

OROTEK App Guide

OROTEK App Guide

This is an example of a short press release I sent to a long list of publications. I’m always pleased when we get printed press yet digital press is valuable too, especially when it comes with a hyperlink to our site. This is true even if the link is not a dedicated page. Dedicated pages make it easier to get stats on web traffic but you can get a referrer address from most services like Alexa and Google Analytics and get the same numbers.

The screenshot for this press release was high res for print but the one pictured here is low res for web viewing.

Product Release – iORO

When sending out product releases to various publications it is important to adhere to their guidelines. Since guidelines vary, particularly in the number of words permissible, I am in the habit of stocking several versions for a quick turnaround. Here are examples of copy I wrote for the iORO product for both domestic and import vehicle publications. I also photographed the product and edited the image. This is a low res image for the web.

Free Tank of Gas

Free Gas cover art

Free Gas cover art

For this short article I was given the title and a mathmatical formula. From there, I came up with the copy and the the royalty free image. The article is on the Orotek website home page with a link to the dedcated page. I’ve also copied it below.

=== begin ===
This is not a contest, so you don’t have to compete with anyone to get a free tank of gas. You don’t have to buy anything from us and there’s no tricks or gimmicks. It’s not even about carpooling, public transportation, biking or walking to work. This is a little known fact that gives you some control of your fuel consumption. In fact, it’s completely up to you to give yourself a free tank of gas.

The little known secret not widely practiced, which gives you control of your fuel consumption is simply keeping your vehicle tires properly inflated. Whenever your vehicle’s tires are underinflated1 by just 3 pounds per square inch it costs you 1% in extra fuel consumption each year. If you use 1 tank of gas per week (20 gallons ) times $3.50 per gallon, that’s $70 per week. Multiply $70 times 52 weeks per year and you get an annual fuel cost of $3500. One percent of $3,500 equals $35. If your tires were underinflated by 6 Psi, you would lose 2% per year, which equates to $70 or one tank of gas. So there you have it, keep your tires properly inflated and save yourself a free tank of gas!

  1. Proper inflation is determined by your vehicle’s tire placard, located inside the driver side door frame (not the wall of the tire as commonly misunderstood). []

Mobile Phone QR Code Campaign Concept 2

Klark Reveals QR Code

Klark Reveals QR Code

In keeping with the first concept this one uses an iconinc image without copyright infringement. Although he may look like a superhero he is just a business man (me really). Again this QR resolves to the home page of this blog but soon I’ll replace it with a QR for a gallery. In any case, its not in print but if you are browsing via a computer you can point your smart phone at the QR stamp on the screen and see how this site looks on a mobile phone. Thanks to WP Touch, a handy plugin for Word Press, this site is mobile friendly.

Kent’s glasses reflect the World Trade Centers in crisis at 9/11. I dropped this easter egg in the image as an omage to the ordinary business men and women who rose to the demand of this tradgedy.

Mobile Phone QR Code Campaign Concept

Winged Victory as QR Campaign

Winged Victory as QR Campaign

I designed this image as an example of how a Quick Response (QR) code could be incorporated into a marketing campaign. Marketing materials have to make you look. With QR Code there is no need for long paragraphs of text. You might not need any words at all depending on the images you use. You can put all your copy online as long as it resolves to a mobile friendly page. In this case the image doesn’t really say what you might find by scanning the QR stamp so some text is in order. It could resolve to vcard or a website. Ideally, it will send the user to a gallery rather than resolve as a contact because clients don’t usually hire artists on the strength of a single image. Right now, it sends the user to the home page of this blog.

I chose the image of the Winged Victory of Samothrace (aka Nike) because of its iconic status and availability in the public domain. The missing head provides the place for the QR code stamp. I think it works better than replacing the head on a statue like Michelangelo’s David because we would immediately miss this saint’s familiar determined look. Winged Victory is known for her missing arms and head so there is no conflict.

The glowing disc that I placed behind the QR code serves two purposes. First it provides the required contrasted background for the code. Second, the circle is evocative of a head and the glow, along with the wings, gives the statue an angelic look and feel.

The neon lines are simply there for pizzazz.

The monochromatic colors harmonize the statue and background into one image and provide good contrast while allowing the QR code stamp to dominate. Venus is approximately two-thirds of the image, balancing the stamp asymmetrically.

iORO Ad 2

iORO Ad for SEMA Daily

iORO Ad for SEMA Daily

This ad was a full color 3/4 page ad in SEMA Daily news for the SEMA Show 2011. We needed an ad that was mostly image rather than the fully loaded text of previous advertisements. I originally designed the swoosh to be light yellow but the client wanted it gray to accentuate the green sensor. This project was initiated by me and features my artwork (including photos) and ad copy. In short, it’s my work from start to finish.

I designed these postcards to be branded by the retailer. The content is similar to the single sheet iORO Jobber flyer. This project is a good example of my ability to produce print materials according to guidelines. Postcards require spaces reserved for postage, barcode, address and retrun address. This download (PDF 977kb ) is low res.  The original is in 300dpi.
